What is the Multi-Store version?
A: The Multi-Store version allows you to have multiple store
locations share the same PC4PAGERS Pro or PC4CELLULAR data. It utilizes a
Client/Server technology. Each location uses a copy of PC4PAGERS Pro
and/or PC4CELLULAR to handle that location's transactions. However, the
actual data is not stored at each location, but rather it is stored at one
main location (called the Hub), on one computer called the Server. All
other computers (Clients) communicate with the Server over a real time
connection, making requests for information. It doesn’t matter if the
Client computer making the request is in the same room or building as the
Server, or miles away at a different location.
Q: What do you mean by real time connection?
A: Each station on the Multi-Store network must be connected to the
Server at the Hub location in order to access customer data. This is
handled via a real time live connection between the station and the
Server. This is how for example, when a payment or a new customer record
is input at a remote station, it is immediately visible by any other
station on the Multi-Store network, whether at the Hub or any other remote
location. When you input a payment or call up a customer record, a program
on the Client computer contacts a program on the Server and makes a
request. The Server program then brings up the requested record or makes
the requested change. If the Client program cannot contact the Server, the
program will not run. This is why a reliable real time connection must be
made before the Client program is run and maintained the whole time the
program is running.
Q: How would the Multi-store version benefit me?
A: It allows you to offer optimum service to your customers and
better control your valuable customer data. Since data entries being made
from any computer on the Multi-Store network are immediately visible from
any station, your customers are free to visit any of your locations to
make payments and/or make changes to their accounts. Additionally, you can
maintain separate inventories for each store, and sort and filter reports
by location to track how individual stores are doing. You do not have to
contend with separate data files for each store. All your vital
information is maintained in one set of data at the Hub. This makes your
data easier to backup, control and more secure.
Q: Is there any limit to the number of locations I can have on the
Multi-Store version?
A: No. Neither PC4PAGERS Pro or PC4CELLULAR limits the number of
locations (computer stations) you can have online. However, there may be
limitations depending on the hardware and connection type and quality
used. We have found virtually no limitations with a more recent Pentium
grade Server and high-speed connections such as DSL.
Q: What do I need in order to use the Multi-Store version?
A: You will need to purchase the PC4PAGERS Pro and/or PC4CELLULAR
Multi-store software. This includes a Hub module and a copy of the
software for each remote location. At the Hub, you will need to have a
network of at least two computers and a network version of the software.
One of the computers should be designated as the Server. The Server is
used to store the data which is accessed by all stations on the
Multi-Store network. Remote locations can have either a single computer or
a network. You will then need to setup a way for remote locations to
connect to the Server at the Hub location. This can be by regular modem
dialup, DSL, cable modems, the Internet, frame relays, and network
routers.
Because the performance of the program at the remote locations is
directly affected by the speed of the connection, we strongly recommend
the fastest connection feasible.
Q: Hub modules, Servers, routers, this sounds complicated. What kind
help can I get to set this up?
A: Our technical support team here at BAM Computer Solutions can
help you install, setup, and configure the PC4PAGERS Pro or PC4CELLULAR
Multi-Store software for optimal performance. However, before we can do
this, your Multi-Store network framework must be in place and operating.
If you do not already have this network framework in place, and are not
comfortable or familiar with setting up local or wide area networks, we
recommend you contact a network specialist in your area for assistance.
These people are well versed in these areas and should be able to assist
you rather quickly in getting your network framework in place. Our support
team will be happy to answer any specific questions your network
specialist may have. Our support team cannot walk you through setting up
your network or establishing remote connections.
Q: What if I want to use the Server at the Hub as a workstation also?
A: Although this will work, we strongly recommend that you do not
do this. This can seriously limit the resources of the Server causing the
operation of the program to slow down for all the other users.
Q. Is this Client/Server environment reliable?
A: Yes. If any Client computer crashes, the rest of the system is
not affected. This differs from stand-alone applications, where one down
machine can bring everyone's work to a halt and possibly cause the loss or
corruption of data. With Client/Server you simply need to bring the Client
computer back up, reconnect to the Server and continue where you left off.
Q. How secure is this type environment?
A: Client/Server is very secure. Since only the Server
accesses the data, all other programs can be denied reading and writing
access. Further, only employees that have rights to access the Server,
have access to your data. Protecting access to your network infrastructure
should be considered. For the most part when using direct dial-up or a VPN
(Virtual Private Network), it is secure. However, if your network connects
through the internet it is more susceptible to unauthorized access.
Therefore, we strongly recommend you take measures to protect your data,
such as putting a firewall in place. Your network specialist should be
very familiar with addressing these issues. Remember, you are responsible
for the security of your data.
Q: Putting this all in place seems complicated and expensive. Is
it?
A: As overwhelming and complicated as this might appear, it
actually is not. Both local and wide Area networks are very common in
today's businesses. The effectiveness of technology has grown over the
past few years, while the costs have dropped substantially, making these
type of solutions much more feasible. In most cases a Multi-Store Network
can be put in place rather quickly and at very reasonable prices. If you
do not have this technology already in place, you might consider speaking
with a Network specialist to get a better understanding and price.
Q: I’m interested. How do I order or get a price quote for my
specific setup?
A: Contact our sales department at (909)468-0687 or send us an email.
They can answer any questions you might have, provide you pricing for your
specific needs and process your order when ready.
